GOLD RUSH! -RARE- SAN FRANCISCO EXCHANGE NOTE FOR 1,500 FRANCS - DATED 1856
This is an antique handwritten "Second of Exchange" sight draft from San Francisco, dated January 28, 1856. It is drawn for the sum of 1,500 francs and payable fifteen days after sight to Pietro Martinelli fu Martino (Italian naming style: “son of the late Martino”) of Maggia. It is addressed to J. B. Pioda Esq. in Bellinzona, Switzerland. The document includes references to a "first unpaid" exchange and a letter dated February 5th.
These were often used by immigrants sending money back home or settling overseas trade accounts. This document is -RARE- in that it is denominated in Francs instead of U.S. dollars and dated near the end/ peak of the California gold rush when many folks were looking to secure and move their money.
Very nice historical display piece. Nicely framed with clear crisp writing on the note.
