It is sad when you realize just where the state places it's values when it comes to people. I live in Scottsville and I work in Zion Crossroads, this means that I travel the back roads through Woodridge, and past Lake Monti-Shithole. It is obvious that the state caters to a gated community of people composed of mostly outsiders, (meaning not born here) that hail from the north. The roads around the lake are snow free, there are enough chemicals and abrasives to handle all the roads in Belmont. Once you stray from any road that leads to or from that lake the roads are still snow and ice covered.
Now lets see, most of the people who live in the area, not fortunate enough to be covered by the graces afforded to a gated community, were born here, those farms have been in the family for generations, they are native folks who are worth less than the new people who live somewhere where us unfortunate people are not allowed to go, we are not good enough.
I am not taking any shots at the folks who have worked their asses off to get the roads clear so we can all get back up to speed, but the fact that Lake people seem to be held in a higher class of importance than those of us who actually have spent our lives here, who have made it possible for the Lake to exist, and all so that we can drive past the locked gates, knowing we are not a blue blood.
Just sad in my eyes.

Give us a break. Obama just gave an interview that he got 95% of what he ask for in Health Care reform. So yes it is "Obama Care". Both reform bills are a wreck because he was to gutless to speak out so the public would know exactly where he stands. He used backroom politics to get what he wanted. Most people are in favor of some type of Health Care reform but they are not in favor of the garbage that congress has put in the bills. Some of you hard core Obama people just refuse to admit he has turned out to be a disaster. Do you remember some of his promises? Change? No more politics as usual? He would not sign any bill loaded with pork, yet two bills have passed his desk that he signed and were loaded with pork? How about how he treated the Dem Virginia Governor candidate? That candidate didn't much agree with Obama and we saw how he was treated. Did you hear about the one Democratic congressman that is now on his hit list b/c that congressman disagrees with his holiness Obama? Please don't forget how he has apologized to all the terrorist in the world for how badly the US has treated them. How about all the "fat cat" bankers he talks about, yet he gives them all these tax breaks? Obama can't accept responsibility for his problems so he just blames others. Obama, Reid and Pelosi are a joke, one lie after another.

I think you will find the majority of americans DO want health care reform.
To call it "Obama care" is the mark of bias. It has been the democrats in congress that have designed these bills--Not the president or the White House--and with absolutely no input from Republicans, who decided early on not to be a constructive part of the process, but just to sit on the sidelines and criticize. As have, as usual, the monied interests--especially the health insurance lobby, who have more well paid lobbyists in Washington than we have representatives and senators combined...
It's an ugly process, but this is the way representative government works. It was this same way when they passed Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Whatever passes will for sure be imperfect--but it will still be far superior than doing nothing.

Presidents Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Truman, Johnson and Clinton have all tried to get health care reform passed. Each time, the monied interests have stepped forward to stop it, and it is decades before a President is elected with a strong enough mandate to try again. If we were to fail again, this time, health care in this country could very well bankrupt us before we got another chance to reform it.

The Senate has given us a gift, and I am thankful--but the process is far from over, and there are still roadblocks. You can bet the ones who may lose money because of what is in this bill will now intensify their attacks.

From everything I've seen on television, ABC, NBC, CBS and yes even FOX, as well as the print media, the majority of citizens do not want want the Senate version of health care reform. And yet our duly elected officials have decided to pass this bill. These are the people who work for us, at least that's what I was taught when I was in school. Yet, they disregard what we want. Thank you congress for sending us a big Christmas present. You have told me in no uncertain way that you do not care what I, as part of the majority, think. I've voted democratic my entire life but come the next election you'll listen to me as you will not receive my vote.

Now, I finally understand the feelings that drove Patrick Henry to deliver his famous speech at St. Johns Church in Richmond in 1775.

To the gaggle of people that sent me emails calling me a "racist", "redneck", "white cracker" for not supporting the President and his agenda and/or congress. Because I disagree politically with an official does not mean I'm racist. President Obama is our President, and I support the Presidency but I cannot support the political agenda which that office is currently driving, let alone the looney-tunes over in Congress. For that I'm labeled a racist, which is interesting considering I'm black. I think society has now developed too much White Guilt, because if I, as a black man make a color neutral post here, am averse to President Obama's political policies the emails I get are for the most part bigoted views of racism because I do not support the President.

I wish that this Christmas everyone reading this will reach out to at least one person that they know wants to hear from them.

My Ex wife got custody of our children and the agreement gave her Christmas with them every year. I didn't fight it because I wanted them to wake up in their own beds Chtistmas morning with their mother. She decided that that meant that I was to have no contact with them on Christmas. Her selfishness killed me year after year. She could not understand how that little act of vengeance on her part destroyed anything we had left.

She got diagnosed with breast cancer this year. She lost it emotionally and finally reached out to me for help. My first inclination was to let her deal with this alone or with one of the men in her life. Instead, I reached down deep and set aside all of the meaness and hatred I felt for the unnessary punishment she dealt me and stepped up and have been there for her.

If I can do it, ANYBODY can do it. I am the most stubborn person on the planet. The christmas thing was the tip of the iceberg of slights I had to endure.

Pick up the phome and call. Tell someone how you really feel. Tell them that you DO need them. You might be surprised how forgiving people can be.

That is all I want for Christmas.

In my case..... Fell on a poorly shoveled walkway into a store. 8 grand in medical bills. I got them covered. THE other case, a lady fell walking into a store that the owners did not shovel at all....broke her nose and shoulder....SHE LOST !
Ruling was: when the store I went into shoveled the walkway they were saying "COME ON IN...ITS SAFE ! IN the other ladys case she made the choice to walk on an unshoveled walkway....her own fault.
So, was it that I had a better lawyer ??
Bottom line......Personal Responsibilty !!!

It's not a matter of going to some place to get some cheap shit - It's a matter of a retailer has a responsibility to it's customers. If the parking lot is unsafe - then it should be shut down to prevent injuries. If greed trumps public safety - then they deserve a lawsuit. If I was filing a suit in this case it would be against the contractor who does the work with Wal-Mart being added on as contributory negligence in the suit. The contractor has a responsibility to do the job they are hired to do - and Wal-Mart has a responsibility to either accept or reject the work that was done.

The roads were awful yesterday, and a semi truck headed west on the 250 bypass got stuck going up a small incline. A very kind gentleman in a red pickup got out of his truck, brought both his shovel and his bag of salt to the semi, and got him unstuck. Although I was admittedly crabby by the lengthened commute yesterday, I loved seeing that there are helpful people out there who think to do more than honk their horns.

I spoke earlier about the fact that I drive in the left lane on the interstate at 70mph daily to stop others from speeding. I have seen at least 50 cars stuck on the side of the road and I love it. I hope the ones that were in a hurry all ended up in a ditch, stuck. You all need to slow down. I don't feel sad for a soul that got stuck, that hit a ditch and possibly got injured. To the folks that drive safe, keep clogging up the "fast lane" and maybe these idiots will learn to slow down. If anyone was in a hurry during this mess, they are so stupid. You knew the storm was coming, there was a lot of notice. Lets all drive the speed limit plus 5 in the left lane and make sure people can't pass out of control. Do your part. The towers did a great job and if you're bitching about the fees, don't drive like an idiot, or drive at all. This is not your typical 4 inch snow. While plows took their last scoop of the lots they looked back ONLY to see that they had to start over on the same lots. These are Nursing homes and Doctors offices and places that need to remain open. There is PRIORITY in emergency. They are not robots and after 48 hours with not so much more than a catnap they are EXHAUSTED, and can become a hazard themselves if they do not rest. Plow gets stuck or wrecked and who can they help then? They are cold, wet and hungry. They can't work because the phone won't stop ringing. Mailboxes are full.
THEY ARE HUMAN..Doing the absolute best they can. 24 inches of snow does not move easily unless you have a grader. Graders won't fit in small areas. Nor can you afford them. Many of the operators have their own jobs as well. They just don't sit still year after year waiting and planning for a 24 inch storm.
Their insurance won't cover extra help off the street. If they wreck their own equipment that cost thousands to replace because you wanted a $125 job done that is THEIR loss.

Yes..many are frustrated...but you are not the only one in the boat. Take a breath and think where we would be if all these men decided to stay home and watch TV on a warm couch eating their nice dinner... GIVE THEM credit where it is deserved. If you want to complain , grab a shovel and start digging AND MAYBE THEN YOU WILL GET THE PICTURE AFTER 30 MINUTES IN THE SNOW. They are out non stop.

Go to VDOT's own road condition website and click on Charlottesville. Then start moving the map around and you see that every major road that connects to this county is in good shape and as soon as you cross into this county they turn to shit.

This whole rant and rave goes back to my initial post about the idiots driving around here. I spoke earlier about the fact that I drive in the left lane on the interstate at 70mph daily to stop others from speeding. I have seen at least 50 cars stuck on the side of the road and I love it. I hope the ones that were in a hurry all ended up in a ditch, stuck. You all need to slow down. I don't feel sad for a soul that got stuck, that hit a ditch and possibly got injured. To the folks that drive safe, keep clogging up the "fast lane" and maybe these idiots will learn to slow down. If anyone was in a hurry during this mess, they are so stupid. You knew the storm was coming, there was a lot of notice. Lets all drive the speed limit plus 5 in the left lane and make sure people can't pass out of control. Do your part. The towers did a great job and if you're bitching about the fees, don't drive like an idiot, or drive at all. Merry Christmas and I hope I can force a few more speeders to miss their exits or make dangerous moves to get over in the lane they should have been in to begin with.

Sounds to me as if you are just pissed because you got stuck. All tow truck drivers have to call back to the boss before they can price a tow...They don't make the prices..If you havnt noticed cab rates go up when weather is bad also.....Its how things work. It takes alot more fuel to drive in the snow...It is alot harder on all the equipment being used. Do some research. And yes it may be more than the normal person makes in a week but they deserve it..Why didn't you walk home get your shovel adn dig yourself out????Because you would have ben cold and wet..You should be pissed at the persont that blew by you...oh yea if you were such a great driver you would have been focused on what was going on around you and noticed that someone was in front or behind you... or passing you...YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS IS YOU WERNT DRIVING TO FAST TO SLOW DOWN!!!!! $125 is not a rip off. Even at if you think they could make $800 a day, you are not realizing that it is a business and the driver only gets a percentage. During the snow, trucks use chains and cables which break, this increases the price. Also they are very busy and it is very dangerous. Alot of these guys are on call all night long too! The cost of upkeep on the trucks, the payments on the trucks, the insurance payments, paying the dispatcher, takes a huge chunk of what the driver charges you. In the end, the driver only gets a reasonable wage , most of time, less than a reasonable wage. If you get out there and get stuck, a buck 25 isn't much to pay to get your car out. It is nothing like towing a broken down car on the side of the road to the shop on a clear day.

if it wont for the dumbass that blew my doors off going too fast for their own good and ended up spinning right infront of me, so yes the ditch was best place to go instead of hitting another car/truck! otherwise i would have been home before it got much worse out! and unlike half you morons out here i know how to drive in this mess! further more i dont think its right to jack the price up just to pull someone out and even when asked how much it would cost and telling me they didnt know. however long it would take. ohh but they knew! i once got towed all the way home from 64 and it didnt cost but 140 and i was twice the distance so yes for 125 that is rediculous! he was already in the area where i had happen to be at to begin with! if he or all others charged say 80 bucks and pulled out say 10 people in a night thats 800 for one night thats more than the avg persons paycheck in a damned week! but hell no one is very resaonable anymore...

If your washer breaks you must have the appliance repairman fix it, the insurance agent gets paid for your insurance and you get paid for your work.
A tow truck driver does just that, and should be paid a fair wage. The job my be 10 minutes, but the drive there and back..not counting calling him out of bed if at night takes time. He must cover a very expensive insurance bill that the 4x4 down the street won't have...but if he yanks your car out of whack you will be left high and dry. I don't agree with gouging...but keep in mind that he has regular customers to care for ON TOP of your call. Have you priced a tow truck lately? His bank will want the payment at the end of the month.
I am not a tow driver...but I am a business person. The tow driver must pay help/secretaries...just like anyone else.
Also...you are not the only one that has to be out today or tomorrow...EVERYONE wants out now.

The problem for me as a tower is that if my competition is charging 150 bucks and I charge a hundred then you see me as a crook.
I am out in the cold all day pulling people out all the while someone else could come up behind me go into a slide and KILL me.

If I wreck my truck I am out of work until it gets fixed.

I'm glad you had a good experience with University Tire, but I've had nothing but bad experiences with them. A year ago, I had a coupon for a discounted oil change from University Tire. They're not my usual mechanic (API on Harris St. is), but I figured I'd take advantage of the coupon since I was due for an oil change. I called ahead, arranged to bring the car in and told them that I thought I also needed a new muffler. Upon arriving, I was told it would take about an hour, so I waited in their (admittedly nice) waiting area. Two hours later, they called me to the counter to tell me that my car needed a catalytic converter, not a muffler. They offered to do it for around $900. I declined, and consulted API for a second opinion. API told me that they could do it for less if I needed it (I think they quoted me $800), but pointed out that as long as I hadn't hit 80,000 miles on my car, I qualified for a FREE catalytic converter replacement under the Federal Emissions Warranty. Conveniently, University Tire had forgotten to mention that - they just wanted my money. API could have underbid them and had my money (I had no idea about the warranty) - instead, they were honest with me, and directed me to a dealership where I got my new catalytic converter for free. I was already happy with them before - but with that, they earned my business for life.

I had been to University on a couple of other occasions in earlier years, and I always left feeling like they had overcharged me, taken way longer than quoted to finish repairs, and always seemed to find several "problems" with my car that hadn't existed before and would require pricey repairs. I hate to play the single young woman card, but I did feel that they were trying to take advantage of that, based on the way they explained all those "problems" to me (all of which inevitably turned out to be nonexistent or negligible upon getting a second opinion).

I highly recommend API - they're honest, and they tell you what you really need and what's not worth spending your money on (and in my case, when you can get something done elsewhere for free!). I've had nothing but good experiences with them.

since we are posting on tires, I am finally going to post my Rave about University Tire and Auto
this summer, I had a flat tire and a tired 2 year old toddler. Cavalier towing showed up quickly and were very professional and helpful
I had called Merchants to see if they had my tires, I needed all 4 replaced not just the flat.
I was told they did not have them in stock, it was a Saturday afternoon and they would be closing soon. They could not tell me how long it would be to get them in stock.

the tow driver suggested I try University Tire -they did have my tires in stock and when I was towed in one hour prior to closing , they had me driving out 2 hours later. They stayed open late to finish my car that same day.
my toddler had an area to play in while we waited stocked with toys and books. Bathrooms clean, friendly staff.

What a great experience from the tow truck service to University Tire- I would recommend anyone to buy their tires and service their car there.
So glad I missed out on Merchants!!!

This past weekend I tried to get an oil change and state inspection at the Merchants tire and auto near pantops (off RT 250). They failed my car for the inspection and wanted an outrageous amount of money to replace windshield wipers. Then when I said I would do it myself they messed with my car by disconnecting hoses under the hood. When I started my car I noticed that it didn't sound right. I told the technicians that they must have done something to it. They denied it with a smug look on their face and challenged me to prove it.

Do NOT go there! They will retaliate if you don't pay their high prices for work you can easily do yourself. I will be complaining to the BBB.... I have heard that the other merchants is just as bad.

I am in the healthcare field and appalled that people in other industries can get away with such unethical behavior.

I agree Jefferson would have supported big business regulation. HOWEVER, he would hardly agree with Obama on the methods. Obama does not want to create a level playing field which would allow anyone with the gumption and brains to partner with an investor and prosper. Obama wants to take money from those who have done that and give it to people who for whatever various reasons have not succeeded.

Jefferson would have acvocated that public education should teach the adage "let the buyer beware" He would have strived to create a system of law where even the lowest guy on the economic scale could have a day in court. He would have been a free market type that would try and have both the least amount of protectionism and regulation nessasary to keep things rolling.

He would never have robbed the rich to give to the poor becuase he was smart enough to know you can only slaughter a cow once.

He would be against the health care bill because he would have little faith in the government to run it honestly or efficiently.

He would however, have been in favor of forcing health insurance companies to get rid of the fine print and write a contract that anyone with a basic education could comprehend and understand without the aid of a lawyer.

He would support a government that provided opportunity not subsidies to both its businesses as well as its people.

He also would have told Tiger Woods that he ought to at least try a little brown sugar.....

Jefferson was a pretty die hard Libertarian in a lot of ways - believed in the ability of each man (person) to be an island unto themselves, free from interference and control by any big power. He would not fit neatly into any category today - not "Socialist" nor "Rugged Individualist".

The problem is: Jefferson was extremely distrustful of all "big" powerful interests - and that was at least as much "big business" as "big government". Jefferson believed that the job of the government was to protect individual liberty. Freedom from religion, freedom from big business, etc.

In Jefferson's economic world, independent farmers could be completely free from the big economic powers - free from big business and self sufficient (off the grid). That's nearly impossible today - you cannot live in our country today without doing business with big business. Unless, of course, you go "off the grid" and live an ascetic life on the side of a mountain somewhere.

This is crazy. What the hell is up with scammers on craigslist? I can see setting up a post to try to scam someone but to try to scam someone who is selling something on craigslist? What is up with that? I post something for sale and I get reply asking if it is available, which I reply it is, than they say they are too busy due to work to pick it up but will send me a check in excess of what I am asking for (to pay the movers who will pick it up). They than ask for my phone # and my work/home address to send the check. I don't know what the fuck they are trying to accomplish but it is a pretty lame attempt.
